Avoiding Mistakes when Applying Coatings

  • Be sure to provide an adequate surface profile for the selected coatings system to bond to. Inadequate surface preparation can lead to delamination. Most coatings require a CSP2-4 depending on the thickness of the coatings system being applied.
  • Repair cracks and holes in the floor prior to applying coatings to get the best result and the maximum coverage.
  • Ensure surfaces are completely dry before applying any coating.
  • Make sure the slab temp is 55 degrees and rising.
  • Always inspect the surface moisture before application, performing an RH moisture test (see information below on moisture meter).
  • Be sure to follow TDS sheets closely to ensure proper mixing times and ratios and the proper order of mixing individual components.
  • Use the recommended application tools, correct fiber length for nap rollers, correct brushes, sprayers and so forth to ensure proper spread is achieved.
  • Do not apply a coating thicker than what the TDS specifies, to achieve a thicker coating, apply multiple coats (be sure to hit the proper re-coat windows).
  • When using pigmented coatings, stir pigment until it is evenly dispersed, make sure it is not settling at the bottom of your container.
  • When storing coatings, be sure containers are properly sealed and store them within the recommended temperature windows. The closer to room temperature the better.
  • When choosing the proper coating be sure to take into account humidity levels, temperature, exposure to chemicals and other environmental variables.
  • Ensure compatibility with primers and other coatings in the system.
  • Make sure area of install is quarantined off from outside debris or fifth in the air that could contaminate the coating as it cures.
  • We recommend pricing and clarifying phase count as multiple phases can make or break a project if not factored in.
